Glenville Scratch Cup

Glenville held their annual Scratch Cups on Sunday with the attendance just under the 100 player mark. Out early before making his way to Croke Park, Joe Joyce the defending champion would be heading to the All Ireland Final in a joyous mood after shooting -17 for his two rounds, he though, was to be in for a surprise when he arrived back for the playoff!
Glenville teammate Julian Kelly has been a man of great consistency in 2017 and he was to join Joe on the -17 total and joint leaders they would remain until the last few groups finished. Within those groups, Sean Goggins a winner here 2yrs ago, was once again finding the Glenville course to his liking and blew the field apart by shooting a stunning -23 total and a 6 shot lead with 18 holes to go.

The ladies Scratch Cup was won by Ger Ward following up her recent victories in Old County and the John Smith Scratch Cup. The local club had winners in the ladies Class 2 with Marion Nolan taking the prize with Mick Keenan and Keith Potter landing the Intermediate and Junior prizes respectively.

The playoff field in behind was packed within 4 shots of each other but nobody could get close to the leading trio. Stephen Murray of Old County put in a superb finish after a slow start and took the final 18 prize with -8 and coming from the pack to leave a target of -18. This was soon passed by William Buckley Jnr and Gary Healy but neither were to taste success this weekend.

Julian Kelly out in the 2nd last group, put in another superb showing with a final round of -7 giving him a total of -24 and that would be good enough to take 2nd spot. Joe Joyce was to finish in 3rd spot as in the final group with Sean Goggins, Joe was overshadowed by a display rarely seen in this game at competition level. Joe could only admire and watch Sean Goggins fly away to the title by 9 shots as he fired in a final round of -10 to finish the day with a staggering -33 total. A truly remarkable score that could have easily been bettered as he was -34 with 5 holes to go!

A 2nd title in 3yrs for Sean Goggins and a brilliant display to witness. Sean thanked all the groundstaff as the course has improved immensely over the past couple of years with the greens in fantastic condition. The club will now look forward to hosting the Gents National Strokeplay in 2018 and with a display like that, Sean Goggins will be one of the punter’s favourites if he qualifies for the finals after a display of total domination.
