Ger back on top of the pile

12/07/2010 - Ger Ward takes outstanding National Strokeplay title

Ger Ward of the Portmarnock Pitch and Putt Club is this morning once again the All Ireland Ladies Senior Strokeplay Champion, after a magnificent performance at Cunnigar Pitch and Putt Club in Dungarvan yesterday. Ger takes her total title haul to 14 and now shares the all time record with Clare Keating of Woodvale. Dublin are very lucky to have possibly the greatest Lady player of all time in their ranks and the Dublin County Board would like to congratulate Ger on her fine win.

In the opening 36 holes Dublin had two players involved in a great battle with Ger finishing her 36 holes on -10 while her club mate and fellow Dublin Inter County player Sheelagh Elmes played the 36th hole on -8 and looking in great shape to make this a real fight for the title. Unfortunately for Sheelagh the 18th hole at Cunnigar is treacherous and cost her a valuable 8 shots, which took her back to -3 overall and meant Ger was now odds on favourite which she lived up to excellently.

A winning margin of 10 shots for Ger from defending champion Tracey McGrath (Offaly) didn't flatter the outstanding performance of the Portmarnock player on the day and with both Sheelagh Elmes (Portmarnock) and Maree O'Toole (Shandon) finishing in the top 10 at the end of proceedings the 2010 Ladies Senior Strokeplay championship can be considered a real success for Dublin Ladies.
